Top Gear Man In Crash

Richard Hammond, one of the presenters of TV's Top Gear, is in critical condition following a car crash.

Mr Hammond was hurt while filming an edition of the show near Leeds.

He was reportedly trying to set a new land speed record for Britain in a jet-powered Vampire car when it overturned.

Mr Hammond was said to have been reaching speeds of up to 280mph as the accident happened.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

Firefighter Dave Ogden, who witnessed the crash, told Sky News that the 36-year-old presenter was able to speak as he was taken out of the wreckage of the car.

Inspector Mike Thompson, of North Yorkshire Police, said officers were dealing with the incident at Elvington airfield, southeast of York, where the filming was taking place.

He said: "At 5.45pm this evening we received a report via the fire service of a male person trapped in what was described as an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield.

"The male occupant has received serious injuries and has been airlifted to hospital at Leeds."

A spokeswoman for the BBC, which produces Top Gear, said: "The incident happened quite recently and the focus of our attention is on Richard at this stage."

Mr Hammond, who lives near Cheltenham with his wife Amanda and their two daughters, has also presented Sky's Brainiac and shows including Time Commanders and Petrolheads.

Toen ik vanmorgen met de CY de A35 opdraaide hoorde ik van het nieuws dat 'Hamster' in het ziekenhuis lag...Ik schrok me werkelijk kapot, want ik vreesde dat Hamster achter Steve Irwin was aangegaan. In de serie Brainiac deed ie soms al wat 'rare en nogal risicovolle' dingen... Hammond hield wel van een risicootje...

Als fanatieke fan van Topgear en de presentatoren hoop ik dat Hamster weer gauw op de been zal zijn...Ook voor zijn vrouw en kinderen...

Voor zover ik weet nog geen nieuw nieuws, maar 300 mph is geen kattepis

Toen hij er af begon te gaan zal het al wel veel minder dan 300 mph geweest zijn aan de foto te zien. Bij 480 km/h was ie wel verder weg gevlogen.

Eerst was het 280mph nu al 300...

Waarschijnlijk zat ie in die auto te schreeuwen dat ie " a motordriving god" was

Inderdaad wel heel erg slecht nieuws. Weet nu niet precies wat z'n toestand nu is. er worden hele verschillende dingen verteld. Schijnt dat JC al wat positiever is. Zn familie is erg geschrokken wat erg begrijpelijk is.

Ik moest gelijk aan Steve Ervin denken, blijkbaar anderen ook.

Hoop dat hij er weer bovenop komt en helemaal gezond wordt. En er niets blijvends aan overhoud. Dan zullen er zeker ook in het programma meer van dit soort grappen worden gemaakt.

"Clarkson told The Sun newspaper that Hammond had smiled when Clarkson had insulted his driving skills."

Doktoren zeggen het volgende:
"The 36-year-old suffered a "significant brain injury" during filming.
Doctors at Leeds General Infirmary have said they were "reasonably optimistic" that he would make a good recovery. "
